Selinevej is one of Copenhagen’s remaining open coastal landscapes, where city, nature, and water meet. With expansive harbor views, coastal vegetation, and gently undulating terrain, the site holds a distinctive landscape character that deserves to be preserved and enhanced.

MAST has used the natural terrain of the site as a primary structure for this project, with new opportunities for recreation, movement, and public access woven into the site. Just minutes from the city center, metro, and airport, the project creates a rare connection between nature and urban life, making the coastline an accessible part of everyday Copenhagen.

A surf park comes with significant demands on energy, water, and land. At Copenhagen Surf Park, reducing its environmental footprint is a fundamental design principle from the outset. The project brings together four interconnected elements: the surf lagoon, surf center, public park, and existing landscape, forming a resource-conscious destination that works with its surroundings.

The wave technology is designed to limit energy consumption, powered by 100% green electricity from the Danish grid and supplemented by rooftop solar panels and energy storage. A compacted crushed-stone lagoon replaces conventional concrete construction, reducing embodied carbon, while timber buildings are designed to sit naturally within the coastal landscape.

Water is recirculated through a closed-loop system, with losses largely limited to evaporation. The site's proximity to public transport and Copenhagen’s cycling network further reduces the need for car travel. Together, these choices shape a surf park that puts landscape, accessibility, and responsible resource use at the heart of its design.

Copenhagen has embraced its waterfront as an essential part of urban life. From harbor baths and kayaking to sailing, winter swimming, and board sports, the city has developed a strong culture of outdoor activity shaped by water, movement, and sustainability.

Copenhagen Surf Park builds on this legacy, bringing surfing closer to the capital and connecting Copenhagen’s active urban lifestyle with Denmark’s established surf culture, from Cold Hawaii to the wider coastline. Located within Amager’s existing landscape of sports, recreation, and outdoor activities, the project has the potential to strengthen the area as a leading destination for urban outdoor life in Northern Europe.
