Vision for a floating Lynetteholmen

Copenhagen is a port city established due to its strategic location in the Øresund in relation to defense and fishing. But the connection to the water has been lost in the development and previous development plans such as The finger plan has to a greater extent focused on the catchment rather than the "watershed". But in a time of accelerating climate change, rising water levels and a threatened marine environment, a new vision is needed to re-establish Copenhagen's connection to the water. A vision that expands and elaborates on Copenhagen's unique cultural history and embraces water as an enriching resource and an essential part of our identity. A vision that works with the water instead of against it.

Floating buildings have been proven in several places in the world to be a far more efficient, flexible and sustainable development process. And in huge land reclamation projects like Lynetteholmen, the differences are crucial. Development with off-site prefabricated floating buildings could be started as soon as the outermost rock reef is fully established in 2026. But instead of planning based on hypothetical future forecasts, urban planning could be dynamically and responsively adapted as the city's needs and priorities change, instead of tearing down and building new. The next 50 years of CO2 emissions, noise and sediment dispersion associated with excavations, tamping and earthworks could be largely eliminated. Added to this is the inherent ability to adapt to the climate that floating buildings naturally possess in relation to sea level rises. The floating buildings are anchored to rpiles where they can easily move up and down, which ensures that the water and the life-giving current in Kongedybet can circulate freely under them and the associated natural habitats for plants and animals are thus preserved. And last but not least, the increasing quality of life, sense of community and accompanying recreational activity opportunities that lie side by side with the water instead of entrenching themselves behind higher and higher dykes.
